Featured Cruise Line: Silversea Cruises
|
In 1994, Silversea Cruises set a course of pampered luxury with the launching of the 296-passenger sister ships Silver Cloud and Silver Wind. Targeting the ultra luxury segment of cruising, the company hired experienced European staff and chartered an exotic course of itineraries. While yacht-like, all-suite luxury ships already had their place, Silversea upped the stakes by adding private verandas to 75% of all staterooms and made the experience as all-inclusive as it gets today. Silver Cloud and Silver Wind were so successful that the line built the larger, 28,000-ton 388-passenger Silver Shadow, which entered service in September 2000. She was followed by Silver Whisper in July, 2001. On Silver Shadow and Whisper, a standard cabin with private balcony is 360 sq. feet (vs. 295 on the existing ships), with most of the added space going into bathrooms and closets. Silversea recently introduced a series of Silversea Expeditions, allowing Luxury clients to experience destinations off the beaten path. Silversea guests can now explore the far corners of the earth while living in luxury accommodations. more

Viking Spirit is a river cruise ship sailing the Seine from Paris for Viking River Cruises. Launched in 2001, this . This 375 foot ship hosts 150 guests and 40 crew. Viking Spirit has a wraparound promenade deck that allows guest the opportunity to take in the fresh air and scenery as they cruise. Viking River cruise ships have classic Scandinavian-influenced interiors designed to be sleek, comfortable and uncluttered in appearance. Furnishings on board are crafted of fine woods; fabrics and wools, cashmeres, cottons and linens in a neutral palette to provide the best possible backdrop for passing scenery. Featured Destination: Alaska

When Seward increased its fee a few years ago, Princess Cruises made Whittier, Alaska, as its embarkation port for southbound Alaska cruises. The good news for Princess passengers is that Whittier is an interesting destination in its own right. Don't visit between November and February, however, unless you bring a flashlight ' the sun doesn't rise high enough during that period for direct sunlight to reach over the nearby Chugach Mountains to warm town. From Anchorage, the trip aboard the Alaska Railroad to Whittier is a scenic 2 hour and 20 minute ride ($55.00 one way). Highlights of your visit would include: fishing, kayaking and day-cruises which cater to visitors who want to explore this "gateway to Prince William Sound." On your way into Whittier you'll pass through the 2.5 mile Anton Anderson Tunnel - the longest highway tunnel in North America. more
